What Your Muscles Really Need

Let’s dive in. We teamed up with industry professionals to break down everything you need to know about protein—so you can confidently choose the right formula to support your goals. Along the way, we’ll unpack common terms you’ve probably seen before, like amino acids, BCAA, and leucine, and explain how they work together to help you train harder, recover faster, and keep pushing forward.

The Basics

Let’s start with the foundation: protein itself. Protein is essential for everyone — but it’s especially critical if your goal is building muscle and improving performance.

“Protein is literally what our bodies are made of,” explains Dr. Nicolet Finger, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. “It’s composed of amino acids, which serve as the building blocks for nearly every structure in the body. Since muscle tissue is built from protein, you must consume enough protein to support muscle growth.”

But muscle growth isn’t the only reason protein matters. Adequate protein intake also helps limit muscle breakdown, supports recovery, and prepares your body to handle the next intense training session.

The Details That Matter

Now let’s zoom in and look at what protein is made of—and what you should be paying attention to when choosing a high-quality protein source.

Amino Acids

Amino acids are the compounds your body uses to create protein. There are 20 total amino acids, and nine are considered essential, meaning your body cannot produce them on its own—you have to get them from food or supplements.

While the remaining amino acids are labeled “non-essential,” they are still extremely important for muscle growth and recovery. The key difference is that your body can produce them internally when needed.

BCAAs

Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) get their name from their unique molecular structure. The three BCAAs—valine, isoleucine, and leucine—are all essential amino acids, meaning they must be consumed through your diet or supplementation.

BCAAs play a major role in muscle building, and research has shown they can also help reduce muscle soreness and training-related fatigue, making them a staple for serious lifters.

Leucine

Leucine stands out even among BCAAs. It’s not only essential—it plays a direct role in activating muscle protein synthesis, the process responsible for building new muscle tissue.

“If you’re adding amino acids, BCAAs, or leucine to your supplement routine, timing matters,” says Dr. Finger.
“Consuming them before a workout allows your muscles to access these nutrients right when they’re primed to use them.”
